Business Imperative

Sheffield-based Radius Aerospace UK Ltd, is a leading provider of high-quality aerospace components that supplies complex fabricated and machined assemblies and exhaust systems to the Aerospace industry. Their core services include welding, bonding, machining, processing and assembly. They provide advanced aerospace manufacturing solutions and have a reputation for excellence through their expertise and advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Innovation is key, and Radius Aerospace continuously invest in research and development to stay at the forefront of technological advancements.

Radius Aerospace has been a customer of Exel since 1993, upgrading to the iomart cloud platform in September 2020.

Radius Aerospace were facing significant challenges with their legacy ERP system, hosted on-premises. The system was outdated and required extensive management and support. To modernise their operations and enhance efficiency, they decided to upgrade their ERP system and migrate to a cloud-based solution with Exel and iomart.

Before adopting the new solution, the previous ERP system, hosted on-premises posed some issues:

Outdated System: The ERP system was an older version that was no longer meeting the business’s needs. It lacked the modern features necessary to stay competitive and efficient.

High Maintenance: Managing the system required substantial resources. The internal IT team had to manage backups, data recovery and ensure that all Microsoft licenses were up to date. This consumed a significant amount of time.

Security Risks: Hosting the ERP system on-site raised security concerns. Ensuring the protection of sensitive data can be challenging, and the risk of data breaches or loss were higher without advanced, off-site security measures and back up.

Operational Downtime: Any disruptions in the internal network could lead to significant downtime, affecting business operations and productivity. Off-site access to the older system proved to be slow and inefficient.

Scalability Issues: The old system lacked flexibility to scale easily.

These challenges highlighted the need for a more efficient, secure and scalable ERP solution that could support growth and operational requirements.

The Results

Radius Aerospace partnered with Exel and iomart to migrate their ERP system to the cloud. The solution provided several advantages:

  • Cloud Hosting: The new ERP system is hosted on two physical servers located in iomart’s secure data centres. This off-site hosting solution ensures high availability and disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Comprehensive Licensing: The solution includes all necessary Microsoft and SQL licenses, eliminating the need for Radius Aerospace to manage these components separately. This means that the software is always up to date and compliant.
  • Enhanced Security: Security is a top priority. The new setup restricts access to the ERP system to only those users connected through Radius Aerospace’s secure endpoints, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorised access and data breaches. Additionally, iomart’s data centres provide advanced security measures, including regular security audits and compliance with industry standards.
  • Disaster Recovery: The new cloud-based solution includes robust disaster recovery. In the event of any disruptions at Radius Aerospace, the system can be quickly accessed from alternative locations via VPN, ensuring business continuity and minimal downtime.
  • Seamless Integration and Support: Exel and iomart managed the implementation and configuration of the new system, ensuring a smooth transition. The process was carefully planned and executed, involving coordination between all parties. Regular support and maintenance services were also included, which provide ongoing technical support.
  • Scalability: The cloud-based ERP system offers scalable resources that can be adjusted based on company needs, providing the flexibility to manage increased data loads and additional users without the need for a significant investment.

The internal IT and Project team, along with Exel and iomart, worked together to ensure that the migration was executed smoothly. This included setting up the necessary VPN connections, transferring data, piloting and commissioning the new system before going live.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Radius Aerospace UK Ltd said, “The ERP implementation was seamless, with minimal disruption to the end users, who could access the upgraded ERP system through a web-based interface.”

Business Benefits

By moving to a cloud-based system, the internal IT team have more time, as they are no longer responsible for managing backups, handling data recovery and ensuring software licensing compliance. This allows them to focus on other critical tasks. The team has seen improved performance, reliability and a reduction in downtime.

The security of the ERP system has been significantly enhanced by hosting the system off-site in iomart’s secure data centres, which provide advanced security features, such as monitoring, security audits and compliance with industry standards.

Plus, they can now scale resource to requirement – this new flexibility allows Radius Aerospace to easily accommodate new users or manage increased data, without the need for significant investment in additional hardware or infrastructure.  The comprehensive licensing included in the solution eliminates the need for separate licensing purchases and renewals, reducing costs.

Overall, the move to a cloud-based ERP system has streamlined operations and enhanced the resilience of Radius Aerospace IT infrastructure. The company is now better positioned to support its growth and technological advancements, ensuring a competitive edge in the aerospace industry.
