Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Britain’s largest carmaker, has confirmed that production at its main production facilities will be suspended until next month at the earliest. The company has announced that the recent cyber attack has meant that they have been unable to restart production since the attack which took place at the end of August.
There are growing fears for many of JLR’s suppliers, who have been severely impacted by the sudden suspension of operations. Like other automotive manufacturers, JLR operate a Just in Time model, and this has left many companies in the supply chain severely exposed. Some vendors have already laid off staff or reduced working hours. There are fears that unless action is taken quickly this cyber attack will lead to more company closures and job losses.
Cyber and Ransomware attacks are an increasing part of the economic landscape, with recent attacks on retail companies such as M&S and Co-operative gaining a lot of publicity. The Co-operative has revealed that the malicious cyber attack in April caused a hit of around £120m to earnings in the year.
